초록
본 고찰은 선학원의 역사, 문화 등의 정체성 계승에 대한 문제를 다룬 글이다. 선학원은 한국 근현대 불교사에서 차지하는 비중이 중요하기에, 선학원 정체성의 재인식 및 계승의 문제는 불교학자가 주목할 과제이다.
필자가 이 문제를 학술적인 측면에서 거론하는 것은 다음의 연유에서 나왔다. 최근 선학원의 운영 및 행보를 주의 깊게 관찰하건대, 선학원 정체성이 본질에서 멀어지고 있다고 보기 때문이다. 이에 대해서는 필자가 기왕의 논고에서 개진한 바도 있다.
이 논고에서 중점적으로 다룬 것은 선학원의 창건 및 운영의 주역에 대한 재인식이 근본적으로 바뀌고 있다는 내용이다. 그 초점은 일제하 선학원의 주역은 만공인데, 한용운으로 전환되고 있다는 것이다. 이는 역사왜곡의 흐름에서 기인한다. 현재 선학원이 한용운을 내세워서 불교사업을 하는 연유에서 기인한 것이지만, 이는 선학원 역사를 혼란케 할 가능성이 농후하다. 그래서 이에 대한 문제를 객관적 기록에 의지하여 비평을 하였다. 한용운도 선학원에 10년간 머물렀기에, 선학원 역사와 전혀 무관하지는 않다. 그러나 그 주역인 만공을 제외하고, 그 자리에 한용운을 놓고 있는 현재 선학원의 역사 만들기는 재검토되고 수정되어야 한다.
필자의 이 글이 선학원 역사의 정립, 만공과 한용운의 재인식 등에 참고가 되길 기대한다.
The question of Seonhakwon’s identity and successor is a question Buddhist scholars need to take note of. The reason I bring up this issue is this. According to recent observations about the operation and direction of Seonhakwon, I believe that the identity or spirit of Seonhakwon is deviating from its original mission. The role of Seonhakwon in modern Korean Buddhism is very important and is a matter of note for Buddhist scholars. I also addressed this question in a previous paper.
The main focus of this paper is to point out that the history of the founding and operation of Seonhakwon is being fundamentally changed and distorted. My point is that Ven. Mangong played the main role in managing Seonhakwon under Japanese colonial rule. However, at present, it conducts important Buddhist matters while honoring the legacy of Ven. Han Yong-un. This is a historical distortion of Seonhakwon’s past. So in this paper I want to offer some objective criticism on this matter.
Even though Han Yong-un did teach at the academy for 10 years, but that has nothing to do with its founding. In modern Korean history, Ven. Mangong was its founder and primary influence. However, today, Seonhakwon appears to honor Ven. Han Yong-un over Ven. Mangong. This needs to be reconsidered. I hope this article will provide some motivation to review this issue, that being to establish Seonhakwon’s definitive history and to reevaluate the roles played by Ven. Mangong and Han Yong-un.
