본 논문은 현대 한국교육이 성장세대로 하여금 4차 산업혁명시대를 지혜롭고 행복하게 살아갈 수 있도록 이끌어주는 데에 실패하고 있다는 인식에서 출발한다. 이러한 한국교육의 문제를 개선하기 위하여 먼저 한국교육의 근거가 되고 있는 서구적 지식관의 문제점을 밝혀내고 대행선사의 지식관을 통하여 대안을 제시하고자 하는 것이 본 논문의 목적이다.
이러한 목적에 따라서 먼저 대표적 서구 지식관을 관조적 지식관, 언어적 지식관, 과학적 지식관, 구성주의 지식관으로 나누어 분석하고 현대사회에서 언어적, 과학적, 구성주의적 지식관이 대세를 이루면서 서구적 지혜전통을 담지하던 관조적 지식관이 영향력을 상실했다는 점을 지적한다.
이어서 대행선사의 지식관을 분석하고, 이를 근거로 하여 본 논문은 대행선사의 지식관이 현대 한국의 학교교육에 다음과 같은 시사점을 줄 수 있다고 주장한다: 첫째, 선사의 지식관은 현대적 지식관의 문제점을 명확하게 통찰하게 하며, 이를 극복할 수 있는 방향을 제시해준다. 특히 ‘주인공관법’ 수행을 통해 지혜를 증장시킴으로써 지식에 대한 고정관념에서 벗어날 수 있게 해 주며 지식을 지혜로 바꿀 수 있는 길을 보여준다. 둘째, 선사의 지식관은 현대교육에서 결여된 진정한 자기를 발견하여 자유로운 삶을 살도록 이끌어주는 지혜를 증진시킨다. 셋째, 선사의 지식관은 참다운 앎은 행과 분리되지 않는다는 것을 보여준다. 이를 통해 지식교육과 인성교육의 통합가능성을 보여준다. 넷째, 선사의 지식관은 공생의 지식관이다. 관법수행을 통해 본래적 자기를 알아가고 세상을 알아갈수록 모든 것은 서로 연결되어 있고 서로 통신하며 살아가고 있음을 알게 된다. 이를 통하여 진정한 더불어 사는 삶이 가능해진다.
This paper starts with charging that modern Korean education is failing to guide the new generation to live wisely and happily in this age of the ‘fourth industrial revolution’. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to first identify the limitations of Western knowledge, which has become the foundation of modern Korean education, and suggest alternatives proposed by Seon Master Daehaeng. I will first analyze four categories of Western knowledge: contemplative, linguistic, scientific, and constructivist. I will then explain my opinion that contemplative knowledge in Western education has lost its influence as linguistic, scientific, and constructivist knowledge have become dominant in modern society. I will then analyze Ven. Daehaeng’s view of knowledge and argue that her view can benefit modern Korean education in the following ways.
First, her view of knowledge provides clear insight into the limitations of the modern view of knowledge and also provides direction to overcome them. In particular, expanding one’s wisdom through the practice of 'Contemplating one’s True Self' (主人空觀法) gives us a way to transform knowledge into wisdom, allowing us to escape from traditional stereotypes of what knowledge is. Second, her view of knowledge emphasizes the importance of the wisdom that can be gained in finding one’s true self, something that is lacking in modern education and which can lead to a more fulfilling life. Third, her view is that true knowledge is not separate from human action. Therefore it is possibile to integrate the cultivation of both knowledge and character. Fourth, her view of knowledge emphasizes symbiosis (共生). As we learn about ourselves and the world through the continuous practice of contemplating one’s true self, we find that all things are connected and in constant communication with each other. This enables us to truly coexist in harmony.
