근대의학이 발전하기 이전까지 역병은 약방藥方으로 다스리기 힘든 재앙이었다. 인간의 힘으로 막을 수 없으니 하늘을 위무하고 역귀를 물리치는 각종 의례를 시행하였다. 재앙을 퇴치하기 위해서는 불교이거나, 도교이거나, 무격이거나 가리지 않았다. 종교와 신앙을 구분하지 않고 영험 있다는 온갖 방안을 동원하였다. 이 글은 역병에 대처하는 한국불교의 의례를 살펴보는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 경전에 등장하는 역병의 대처 방안과 그 의례를 살펴보고, 고려, 조선시대 불교가 어떻게 역병에 대처하였는가를 이해하였다.
경전과 다라니에는 역병에 대처하는 다양한 이야기가 전한다. 경전에서는 대체로 역병의 발생 원인을 불법이 쇠퇴하는 말세의 현상으로 진단하고 그 해결책으로 불법의 회복과 정법의 실현을 강조한다. 다라니에서는 보다 구체적인 방법, 즉 역병퇴치 의례를 제시한다. 이러한 차이는 있지만 경전과 다라니에서는 공통적으로 독송을 강조한다.
고려, 조선의 역병과 관련한 많은 불교의례가 이러한 특성을 반영한다. 고려의 반야도량과 경행, 불정도량과 마리지천도량, 점찰회와 소룡도량, 약사도량, 관음기도, 그리고 조선의 수륙재와 경행 등 다양한 의례가 진행되었던 이유는 소의경전이나 신앙의 독창성, 의례의 형식 등이 중요하지 않았기 때문이다. 역병을 물리치기 위한 현실적 필요에 의해 그때마다 의례의 방식을 선정하였다. 그 결과 이러한 의례를 관통하는 어떤 일관성이나 체계적 경향성을 발견할 수 없게 되었다. 의례의 종류나 형식, 절차가 중요한 것이 아니라 재난을 물리치려는 간절한 기도와 중생의 안심이 불교의례의 궁극적 목적이었다.
Until the development of modern medicine, epidemic diseases were a disaster that could not be controlled by medicine. Since they could not be prevented by human effort, various rituals were performed to comfort the heavens and evil spirits. In order to combat such disasters, religious ceremonies rooted in Buddhism, Taoism, or shamanism were often resorted to. Our ancestors did not distinguish between religion and faith, but used a variety of spiritual ceremonies. The purpose of this study is to examine the application of Korean Buddhist rituals to deal with our current epidemic, and to that end, I will look at various sutras and their associated rituals. Buddhist rituals were also used to combat epidemics during the Goryeo and Joseon periods using various sutras and dharanis.
According to most sutras, the cause of an epidemic was usually attributed to a decline in the people’s faith in Buddhist teachings, and the solution was to emphasize the restoration of Buddhist truth. Dharanis were often associated with a specific ritual to fight an epidemic. Although there were some differences between sutras and dharanis, they both commonly emphasized chanting and prayer. Many Buddhist rituals related to the epidemics in Goryeo and Joseon reflected these characteristics. The reason many rituals were performed was that believing in and having faith in them was not really that important; they were performed for the real need to fight the epidemic. As a result, there was little or no consistency in these rituals. Their form and content didn’t really matter because their ultimate purpose was to defeat the epidemic and bring relief to the people.
