묘공당 대행(1927~2012)은 근현대 한국불교의 대표적인 고승 가운데 한 사람으로서, 그의 핵심적인 사상은 한마음과 주인공主人空 관법 및 오공五共으로 대표되는 선사상이라 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 ‘조사선의 관점에서 대행의 선사상을 어떻게 해석할 수 있는가?’ 하는 문제의식에서 출발한다.
대행의 선사상은 경허 이후 새롭게 형성된 근대 한국선의 영향을 간접적으로 받으면서도 독자적인 수행을 통하여 깨달음을 얻은 이후 독자적인 교화법을 통하여 현대 한국선의 새로운 지평을 확장하였다는 점에 큰 특징이 있다. 따라서 ‘대행의 선사상이 전통적인 조사선 사상과 어떠한 점에서 공통점이 있고, 또 어떠한 특징을 계승하고 있는가?’ 하는 점을 규명하는 작업은 대행선을 전통적인 선사상의 흐름 속에서 파악할 수 있는 계기를 마련한다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
‘조사선’이란 조사가 제시한 선사상이라 정의할 수 있는데, 조사선의 의미와 외연에 대해서는 학자들마다 견해를 달리하고 있다. 본고에서는 조사선에 대한 여러 가지 관점을 살펴보고, 당대唐代의 혜능과 마조 및 임제를 잇는 선사상이 조사선의 정통이라고 보았다. 그리고 이러한 조사선의 특징으로 본래성불本來成佛에 입각한 불성론과 도불용수道不用修∙무수지수無修之修의 수증론 및 선문답禪問答과 조사관祖師關을 중시하는 특징을 제시하였다.
이러한 조사선이 당대唐代의 불교계와 이후 중국과 한국불교의 주류사상으로 등장하게 된 결정적인 이유는 본래성불의 입장을 견지하면서도 조사들 나름대로 독특한 선풍을 활발발하게 제시한 데에 있다고 할 수 있다. 대행의 선사상 또한 당시 한국 선불교의 전통을 묵수적으로 계승한 것이 아니라 독자적인 깨달음의 체험과 이에 바탕한 독자적인 선풍을 드날렸다는 점에 큰 특징이 있다. 본고에서는 대행선이 조사선의 핵심 사상을 계승하면서도 그가 제시한 수행 및 교화의 방편에는 독자적인 특징이 동시에 존재한다는 점을 규명하였으며, 이를 통하여 대행선이 현대 조사선의 하나로서 차지하는 위상과 의의를 드러내고자 하였다.
Myogongdang Daehaeng (1927-2012) was one of the most prominent monks of modern and contemporary Korean Buddhism. Her core ideas can be said to be Seon teachings represented by Hanmaum (One Mind) and Juingong (主人公) meditation. This study begins with the question, “How can we interpret Daehaeng's Seon thought from the perspective of Patriarchal Seon (祖師禪)?” Daehaeng’s Seon thought was indirectly influenced by modern Korean Seon that took shape after Ven. Gyeongheo (鏡虛 1849-1912). Daehaeng also attained enlightenment through her own form of practice. Daehaeng’s Seon has been characterized by the expansion of the new horizon of modern Korean Seon through her own methods of edification. The process of identifying what Daehaeng Seon has in common with traditional Patriarchal Seon and what characteristics it inherited is meaningful in that it provides an opportunity to identify Daehaeng Seon’s role in the flow of traditional Seon thought.
‘Patriarchal Seon’ can be defined as ‘Seon taught by the patriarchs, but scholars have different views on the meaning and character of Patriarchal Seon. In this paper, I looked at various perspectives on Patriarchal Seon and saw that the Seon ideology that linked Hui-neng, Mazu and Lin-ji during the Tang Dynasty became the orthodoxy of Patriarchal Seon. Their characteristics also included: the theory of Buddha-nature based on the original Buddha; the theory of cultivation and awakening (as reflected in the sayings ‘Truth does not need practice’ and ‘practice without practicing’). It also emphasized Seon koans and the viewpoints of the patriarchs.
The main reason these forms of Patriarchal Seon emerged as the mainstream ideology of Tang Dynasty Buddhism, Chinese Buddhism and Korean Buddhism is that they maintained their position that each person has an inherent Buddha nature and actively sought out their own methods and practices. Daehaeng Seon was also characterized by the fact that it did not inherit the tradition of Korean Seon Buddhism implicitly at that time, and also by its own experience of enlightenment and its own style based on individual experience. In this paper, I investigated the fact that Daehaeng Seon carried forward the core ideas of Patriarchal Seon and that its unique characteristics existed simultaneously in the practice and methods of edification Ven. Daehaeng proposed. Through my research I intend to reveal the status and significance of Daehaeng Seon as being a modern version Patriarchal Seon.
