초록
본 고찰은 한국 현대 비구니의 고승으로 지칭되고 있는 대행의 역사성을 살피려는 고찰이다. 필자는 이 글에서 그의 행적을 혁신 불교라는 관점에서 살펴보았다. 지금껏 대행에 대한 학술적인 접근은 충분하지 않았고, 기왕의 일부 연구도 문도, 제자 등에 의하여 시도되었다. 이런 현황은 접근의 다양성, 심화성, 역사성 등에 있어서 문제점을 갖고 있다. 이런 전제하에서 필자는 대행 및 한마음선원의 역사를 본격적으로 접근하기 위한 시론으로서 대행의 행적을 혁신불교의 관점에서 정리하고자 하였다. 혁신불교는 불교의 수행, 제도, 노선, 포교 방법 등을 새롭게 추진한 노선을 말한다. 이에 반해 개혁불교는 기존의 제도, 관행 등을 유지하려는 복고적인 노선으로 보았다. 지금껏 혁신불교와 개혁불교를 혼용한 것을 필자는 구분하고자 하였다. 이런 취지에서 필자는 이 글에서 대행의 행적을 수행, 교화 및 사회 활동, 자료, 정체성 및 계승으로 구분하여 살펴보고자 하였다. 필자는 대행의 연구가 심화되기 위해서는 그를 설명해주는 역사적인 기록, 증언, 보조 자료 등에 대한 충분한 검토가 절대 필요하다고 본다. 그래서 대행이 수행하고 추진하였던 제반 행적은 그에 연관된 자료를 객관적, 학문적인 입장에서 분석을 거친 연후에 서술, 이해되어야 한다고 본다. 이런 입장에서 본고는 적지 않은 한계를 갖고 있다. 그러나 이 글에서는 대행 행적의 성격에 따른 정체성을 추출하는 선에서 머물고자 한다. 추후에는 각 행적의 시기, 행적, 내용에 따른 세부적인 연구가 이어져야 할 것이다. 이 연구가 대행, 한마음선원, 현대의 비구니사, 혁신불교 등의 연구에 참고가 되길 기대한다.
This study is to examine historicity of the Seon master Daehaeng called as a high priest amongst the modern Korean Bhiksunis. From perspective of innovative buddhism, I explored her account of conduct in this paper. So far, there has been few academic approaches on the Seon master Daehaeng, even so some researches were made, those have been done by her disciples and members of her school. These studies have some problems, such as, diversity of approach, intensivity, and historicity etc. Under this premise, as a trial discussion to access in earnest to history of Hanmaum Seon Center and the Seon master Daehaeng, I sought to arrange her conducts in perspective of innovative buddhism. While innovative Buddhism refers to newly promoted lines with buddhist practices, system, routes, and ways of propagation, reformative buddhism may be seen as restorative lines to preserve existing systems and customs. For the confusion between innovative buddhism and reformative buddhism, I tried to explicit what they exactly are. With such a purpose, I looked into the Seon master's conducts as dividing into practice, edification, social activity, related materials, identification and succession. To intensify the study for Daehaeng, there needs some sufficient reviews on historical records, testimonies, and ancillary data which can explain her. Therefore, all of conducts the Seon master practiced and promoted should be described and understood after analyzing concerned information objectively, academically. In this respect, this paper has some limitations. However, for this study, I just want to mention about identification of the account of conduct of the Seon master Daehaeng. Hereafter, detailed researches should be continued in accordance with the time of each conduct, conducts, and its contents. I hope this study could be as a reference to researches for the Seon master Daehaeng, Hanmaum Seon Center, histories of modern Bhiksunis, and innovative buddhism.
