이 논문은 대행선사의 오공의식이 지닌 사상적 특징과 그 역사적 연원에 대한 탐구를 시도한 논문이다. 논의를 전개하는 과정은 전체적으로 네 단계로 구성되어 있다. 첫째는 오공의식의 구체적인 내용을 한마음요전을 통해 적시하는 부분이다. 여기서 대행은 오공을 일심의 작용이라 설명한다. 그것은 공생, 공심, 공체, 공용, 공식이다. 둘째 오공의 사상적 특징을 공리共利 개념으로 이해하고자 하며, 그 사상적 유사성은 당나라 때의 고승인 길장이 이미 언급하고 있음을 말하고자 한다. 셋째는 오공의식의 구조와 사상적 특징, 사상적 연원을 이전의 사상가들 속에서 찾아보고자 했다. 넷째 과거의 역사성이나 사상성에 근거해 대행이 지니는 역사적, 종교적 의의가 있다면 그것은 무엇인가에 대해 살펴보고자 했다. 이상의 네 단계를 거치면서 살펴보지만 내용의 핵심은 대행의 오공의식 속에 내재되어 있는 사상적 특징은, 이전의 불교적 영향 속에서도 독자적인 수행체계와 사회적 실천을 지향하고 있다는 점이다. 『대승기신론』의 일심이문의 기본적인 영향 속에서도 심생멸문에 주안점을 두면서 대중과 함께하고자 하는 의식이 오공의식으로 구체화되었다고 볼 수 있다는 점이다. 사상적 연원을 거슬러 올라가면 보리달마의 『이입사행론』과 유사성을 발견할 수 있으며, 천태종의 ‘명明과 무명無明을 둘로 보지 않는’ 정신과도 상통점을 찾을 수 있다. 이런 점은 남중국의 교의학에서 중시하는 ‘현실을 중시하는 가운데서도 이상을 추구하는 마음을 포기하지 않는 정신’과 일맥상통하고 있다는 점이다.
무엇보다 중요한 것은 전환기의 한국사회에서 한마음선원이 대중의 지지를 받게 되는 원인이 오공의식 속에서 찾을 수 있다는 점이다. 오공의식이 지니고 있는 현실을 중시하는 사상적 경향은 대중과의 소통이자 대중의 아픔을 공유하고자 하는 정신이다. 그런 의식이 전환기의 한국사회에서 한마음선원이 성장하는 결과로 나타났다고 본다. 오공의식은 그런 점에서 본다면 사회적 요구에 무의식적으로 반응한 종교적 실천이며, 대중들에게 희망과 용기를 주고자 하는 자비심의 발로이다. 물론 그러한 사상의 연원은 과거 수많은 불교사상가들에 의해 피력되었다고 하더라도, 대행처럼 구체적인 실천방안을 제시하지 않았다는 점에서 더욱 주목할 가치를 지닌다고 평가할 수 있다.
This paper tries to explore the philosophical features and historical origin of Ven. Daehaeng's teaching, the “Awareness of Five Sharings.” The process of developing the discussion consists of four stages. Firstly, the specific content of the Awareness of Five Sharings is explained in Ven. Daehaeng’s book Essentials of the One Mind in which she explains the Five Sharings in terms of the function of the One Mind. Secondly, I tried to understand the ideological characteristics of the Five Sharings as the concept of “sharing benefit,” a concept whose philosophical point is similar to that of the eminent Chinese monk Master Jizang (吉藏 549–623). Thirdly, I tried to identify the structure, ideological features, and origin of the Awareness of Five Sharings in the ideas of Master Jizang. Fourthly, I tried to identify the historical and religious significance of Ven. Daehaeng on the basis of past historiography and ideology. As I reviewed the above four stages, the ideological characteristic inherent in her Awareness of Five Sharings is that it aims at an independent Buddhist practice system and social practice. The Awareness of Five Sharings as taught by Ven. Daehaeng is influenced by a trend to share with the public and emphasizes the “arising-and-ceasing (生滅)” aspect, one of the two aspects of the One Mind as presented in Awakening of Mahāyāna Faith . Most importantly, the reason Hanmaum Seon Center is supported by the public in this transitional period of Korean society can be found in the Awareness of Five Sharings. It is the ideological tendency that attaches importance to the reality derived from the spirit of communicating with the public and sharing the pain of the public. Awareness of the Five Sharings is a religious practice that unconsciously responds to social demands in this respect. It is a step toward compassion to give hope and courage to the public. Even though many Buddhist thinkers in the past have tried to express it, they provided no concrete action plan. However, Daehaeng's did practically in terms of Five Sharings.
