초록
담연당 선경은 질곡의 역사를 살았다. 삶은 안정되지 않았고 배움의인연도 얇았다. 그러나 불연佛緣에 의해 출가하여 수승한 수행자의길을 걸었다.
입산 후 신심을 기르고 참선 공부를 하기 위한 소양을 갖췄다. 만공의안내로 참선 수행을 시작하여 밤낮을 잊고 밥을 먹을 수 없을 정도로절박하게 수행하였다. 평생을 ‘만법귀일 일귀하처萬法歸一 一歸何處’의화두에 전념하였다. 그러한 선경의 깨달음의 세계는 담박하고 명백하여 걸림이 없는 대자유의 세계이다.
이후 제방에서 만행을 하며 당대의 여러 비구 선사들과 법거량을하였다. 자그마한 비구니이면서도 당당하게 전광석화처럼 법거량을했다. 일생동안 화두를 항상 곁에 두고 한 몸으로 여겼다. 이렇게보림을 통해 깨달음의 진전과 회향의 길을 다져나갔다.
선경의 수행과 단단한 결의로 불철주야 정진하여 한 소식을 얻은일은 후대의 비구니들에게 훌륭한 귀감이다. 후학에게는 인자한 어머니처럼 자비로 대하면서 상대방의 장점을 들어 수행을 독려하였다.
이러한 선경의 수행은 모범적인 출가자의 모습으로 지금까지 제방에회자되고 있다. 그런 만큼 선경의 뒤를 이어 참선수행의 전통을 계승해 나아가야 하는 비구니의 사명이 후학들에게 남아 있다.
Damyeon Seongyeong lived at a difficult time in history. Life then was chaotic, and her opportunities to learn were scarce.
However, she entered monastic life thanks to her Buddhist connections and walked the path of a noble practitioner.
Upon entering monastic life, she cultivated her faith and solidified her foundation to study Seon (Chan/Zen) meditation.
Under the guidance of Mangong, she began practicing Seon with such fervor that she often forgot whether it was day or night, in addition to not eating properly. She devoted her entire life to investigating the hwadu: "All things return to the one.
To where does the one return?" The world of Seongyeong's enlightenment was simple and clear, a world of great, unobstructed freedom.
Later, she began an itinerant practice, traveling to various parts of Korea and engaging in "dharma duels" with several Seon monks. Even though she was a nun of small stature, she proudly carried out her dharma duels with confidence and dignity.
Throughout her life, she always kept her hwadu in mind and considered herself to be one with it. In this way, by maintaining her practice after awakening, she further cultivated her awakening and found ways to transfer what she had learned to others.
The fact that Seongyeong attained enlightenment after practicing tirelessly day and night with firm determination makes her a great model for future generations of nuns. She treated her younger students with compassion, like a loving mother, and encouraged them to practice by emphasizing their strengths. Seongyeong's Seon practice is still cited as the model of an exemplary practitioner. As such, the mission to follow in her footsteps and pass on the tradition of Seon practice still remains for younger generations.
