초록

이 논고는 만해 한용운의 망우리 묘소에 대한 제반 문제를 검토한 글이다. 만해 묘소는 지금껏 학술적 연구의 대상이 되지 않았다. 즉연구 소재로 인식되지 않았다. 그러나 필자는 만해 묘소를 만해의 추모, 기억, 계승, 교육의 차원에서 중요하게 인식하였다. 그래서다음의 관점에서 이 글을 준비하였다. 첫째, 만해의 입적, 영결식, 화장, 안장의 문제를 근거에 의해서 정리하였다. 이런 제반 사실을 문헌과 증언에 의해서 정리하는 것은만해 삶의 역사를 풍부하게 만드는 것이라 이해된다. 둘째, 8∙15해방 직후 만해 묘소에서의 추모, 행사를 정리하였다. 동시에 1960년대 만해 묘소의 관리 부실의 문제와 논란(이전, 현 위치 유지 등)도 다루었다. 셋째, 1970~80년대 만해 묘소의 문제를 다루었다, 여기에서는 1973 년 한용운 전집 발간 이후 만해에 대한 관심이 높아지면서 대학생불교 연합회, 대한불교청년회, 만해사상연구회 등의 단체가 만해 묘소에서 행한 행사를 정리하였다. 넷째, 1990년대 이후 만해 묘소에서 행해진 제반 문제를 정리하였다. 그는 관리 정상화, 추모 행사의 다양화로 요약된다. 서울시와 중랑구청의 문화재 지정, 역사문화공원 승격 등이 그 내용이다. 이상과 같은 내용을 통하여 우리는 만해 한용운의 입적부터 현재까지 만해의 기억, 추모, 계승의 문제를 심화하여 살필 수 있다. 나아가서는 만해 추모∙계승 사업의 재인식의 계기를 만날 수 있다. 이 글이 만해학 연구의 심화 및 다양화, 만해사업의 새로운 인식에 도움이 되기를 기대한다.

This paper examines various issues related to the grave of Han Yong-un (pen name, Manhae), located in Manguri Cemetery. Manhae’s grave has not previously been a subject of academic research. In other words, it has not been recognized as a research subject. However, I recognized the importance of Manhae’s grave in terms of commemorating and remembering Manhae, as well as the succession and propagation of his legacy. Therefore, I prepared this paper from the following perspectives. First, I organized the issues related to Manhae’s passing, funeral, cremation, and burial based on evidence I uncovered. I understand that organizing these various facts based on documents and testimonies enriches the history of Manhae’s life. Second, I organized the memorial ceremonies and other events performed at Manhae’s grave right after Korea’s liberation on August 15 in 1945. At the same time, I also addressed the issues and controversies concerning the poor management of Manhae’s grave in the 1960s, including its relocation and maintenance of the current location. Third, I also addressed the issues of Manhae’s grave in the 1970s and 1980s. As interest in Manhae grew after the 1973 publication of the Complete Works of Han Yong-un, many events were held at Manhae’s grave by organizations—including the University Student Buddhist Association, the Korean Buddhist Youth Association, and the Manhae Thought Research Association—and I organized them. Fourth, I organized various events that took place at Manhae’s grave since the 1990s. These events can be summarized as the normalization of management and the diversification of memorial events. These include the designation of cultural properties by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Jungnang-gu Office, and the designation of Manguri Cemetery as a historical and cultural park. Through research into the above events, readers will be able to examine in depth Manhae’s memory, commemoration, and legacy from the time of his passing to the present. Furthermore, it will give people the opportunity to resurrect various events and ceremonies to commemorate and carry on his legacy. I hope that this paper will help deepen and diversify studies related to Manhae and provide a new understanding of his legacy.
