본 논문은 묘공 대행(1927~2012)의 독창적인 기세간器世間 관점을고찰한다. 불교에서 기세간은 유정有情들이 거주하는 물질적 환경과 우주법계를 의미하며, 우주와 존재의 근원, 세계의 생성과 소멸에대한 심오한 통찰을 담고 있다. 전통적인 불교 교학에서 기세간은 삼천대천세계의 구조와 성주괴공成住壞空의 순환을 설명하며 우주의 본질이 공空임을 논증한다. 대행은 이러한 전통적 이해를 바탕으로 기세간의 긍정적이고 창조적인 측면에 주목한다. 대행은 기세간을 단순한 물질적 세계로 한정하지 않고, 마음(한마음)과 환경의 상호작용을 통해 끊임없이 변화하는 유동적인 세계로 바라본다. 특히 대행은 우주와 존재의 근원이 불성佛性이라는 점과 전통적인 불교의 환멸문還滅門 방향의 연기법緣起法 접근을 넘어, 생성적 측면을 강조하는 유전문流轉門의 시각을 보여준다. 또한 기세간의 우주적 확장을 의인화한 우화적 서술을 통해 대중의 이해를 돕고 불이不二의 원리를 쉽게 전달한다. 대행은 기세간이 단순히 철학적 사유의 대상이 아니라, 중생이 자신의 마음을 탐구하고 세상을 조화롭게 변화시킬 수 있는 실천적 장場임을 역설한다. 그의 기세간관觀은 현대사회에도 중요한 교훈을 제공하며, 우주의 본질과 삶의 진리를 이해하려는 대중에게 귀중한 통찰을 제시한다.
This paper examines the unique perspective of Ven. Myogong Daehaeng (1927-2012) on bhājana-loka(器世間, the vessel world). In Buddhism, bhājana-loka refers to the material environment and the universal dharma-realm where sentient beings reside,encompassing profound in sights into the origin of the universe, existence, and the cycles of world formation and dissolution. In traditional Buddhist teachings, bhājana-loka explains the structure of the Sahā world (Samsāra) and the cycle of formation, dwelling, decay, and emptiness (成住壞空), demonstrating the inherent emptiness (śūnyatā) of the universe. Building upon this traditional understanding, Ven. Daehaeng focuses on the positive and creative aspects of bhājana-loka. Ven. Daehaeng does not limit bhājana-loka to a mere material world but views it as a dynamic realm constantly transforming through the interaction of mind (one mind) and environment. Specifically, Ven. Daehaeng emphasizes that the origin of the universe and existence lies in Buddha-nature (佛性) and pres-ents a "flow-transformation gate" (流轉⾨) perspective, which accentuates the generative aspect of dependent origination (緣起法), moving beyond the traditional "return-extinction gate" (還滅⾨) approach in Buddhism. Furthermore, she facilitates public understanding and easily conveys the principle of non-duality (不⼆) through allegorical descriptions that personify the cosmic expansion of bhājana-loka. Ven. Daehaeng asserts that bhājana-loka is not merely an object of philosophical contemplation but a practical field where sentient beings can explore their minds and harmoniously transform the world. Her view of bhājana-loka continues to offer crucial lessons for contemporary society, providing valuable insights to those seeking to comprehend the essence of the universe and the truth of life.
