초록

이 글은 대행선大行禪을 이해하는 데에 기존 불교 용어 중심의 이해에서 벗어나 대행선의 가치가 담긴 ‘맥락’을 중심으로 접근하는 방식을 제안함으로써 대행선을 보다 열린 개념으로 확장시킬 수 있는 방안을 시론적으로 모색한 글이다. 대행선사는 불교를 특정 종교적 체계로 보기보다는 ‘진리’의 또 다른이름으로 이해하면서 불교가 특정한 교리 체계가 아니라 우리의 삶자체에 내재한 진리임을 강조한다. 이러한 인식을 바탕으로 대행선사는 특정 불교 용어보다 그것이 담고 있는 의미를 전하는 데에 초점을맞추어 법문을 하였고, 비유의 언어를 적극적으로 사용함으로써 일반 대중이 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 하였다. 대행선의 이러한 특징은, 이미 불교의 역사에서 같은 용어라도 서로다른 맥락으로 해석될 수 있고 다른 용어라도 동일한 맥락을 담고있을 수 있다는 점에서 연유한다. 이상의 검토를 바탕으로 대행선의 대중화를 위하여 대중미디어와 교육 시스템을 활용하는 방안을 제안하였는데 이것 역시 기본적으로는 대행선사가 사용한 맥락 중심의 설법 방식을 적극 확장시키는 방향을 도모한 것이다. 먼저, 대중미디어를 통하여 종교색이 드러나지 않는방식으로 대중에게 접근하는 전략이 필요함을 제안하면서 대행선사의 설법 방식이 온전히 담겨있는 선법가가 좀더 대중적으로 수용되어야 함을 강조하였다. 이어서, 대행선 연구 및 교육을 위한 대학∙대학원∙평생교육원 등을 설립해야 할 필요성을 제기하여 그러한 공적인 제도를통하여 일반 학문과 연계하여 대행선을 더욱 보편적인 개념으로 전달할수 있음을 제시하였다. 거듭 강조하지만, 대행선의 대중화를 위해서는 불교 용어 중심이 아니라 맥락 중심으로 접근해야 한다. 그렇게 하여야 미디어와 교육을 통해 일반 대중이 대행선에 쉽게 접근할 수 있다. 그리고 이미 대행선사는 용어에 얽매이지 않는 법문을 통해 그러한 길을 제시하였다.

This essay proposes an approach to understanding Daehaeng Seon that focuses on the “context” impregnated with the values of Daehaeng Seon, and away from conventional understanding based on Buddhist terminology, thereby seeking a way to expand Daehaeng Seon into less rigid concepts. Understanding Buddhism not as a specific religious system but as another name for “truth,” Seon Master Daehaeng emphasized that Buddhism is not a specific doctrinal system; it is the truth that is inherent in our lives. Based on this approach, Master Daehaeng focused her Dharma talks on conveying the meaning contained in specific Buddhist terms rather than just the terms themselves, and she used metaphorical language to make it easier for the general public to understand. This characteristic of Daehaeng Seon stems from the fact that the same term can be interpreted in different contexts in the history of Buddhism, and different terms can also be used in the same context. Based on the above review, I proposed a plan to utilize mass media and education system to popularize Daehaeng Seon, which also basically seeks to actively expand the context-centered teaching used by Master Daehaeng. First, I proposed the necessity of a strategy to approach the public through mass media in a way that does not sound too blatantly religious. I also emphasized that Seon Dharma Songs (Seonbeopga)—which fully utilizes Master Daehaeng’s teaching method—should be promoted to gain wider acceptance by the public. Next, I suggested that it is necessary to establish universities, graduate schools, and lifelong education centers for Daehang Seon research and education, and that Daehaeng Seon can be conveyed as a more universal concept by connecting it with general academics through such public institutions. I reiterate that in order to popularize Daehaeng Seon, it must be approached from a context-centered perspective, not from a Buddhist terminology-centered perspective. Only then can the general public easily access Daehaeng Seon through media and education. Master Daehaeng has already presented such a path through her Dharma talks that are not bound by rigid and inflexible terms.
