초록

본 연구는 한마음선원 구정탑九淨塔에 담긴 부처의 가르침이 어떻게 상징적으로 형상화 되었는지에 관한 분석이다. 대행은 구정탑에 부처의 가르침을 ‘공생共生, 공심共心, 공용共用, 공체共體, 공식共食’으로 해석하여 상징적으로 표현하였다. 탑은 부처의 사리를 모시는 것에서부터 시작되어, 불탑 신앙으로 발전되었다. 이에 불교 미술은 다양한 시각적, 공간적 표현을 통해 부처의 가르침을 표현하였고, 이것을 통해 보는 사람들로 하여금 부처의 사상을 이해하고 신앙심을 고취시키는 역할을 하였다. 이처럼 탑도사원의 중요한 장엄으로 자리하게 되었다. 즉, 탑은 부처의 가르침, 탑을 만드는 사람 그리고 그것을 상징화하는 스님들의 마음이 조화롭게 화합하는 상징적인 조형물인 것이다. 대행은 부처의 가르침을 포괄적인 개념인 오공五共으로 해석하였고, 이러한 현대적인 해석이 구정탑으로 형상화되었다. 대행이 강조하는 부처의 가르침은 더불어 같이 하나임을 의미한다. 즉, 먹어도 같이 공식을 하고, 생각을 내도 공심으로, 몸을 움죽거려도 공용으로, 공생으로 같이 더불어 살아가고 있음을 대행은 오공으로 강조하고 있다. 대행은 구정탑을 통해서 실천적 수행을 핵심으로 하는 부처의 가르침을 강조하고자 한 것이다. 탑을 세우고 탑돌이를 하는 것은 자기의 불성을 알아차리는 것이라고 한다. 대행은 문화적인 요소를 불교에 융합하여 그 의미를 살리면서 현대적으로 상징화하는 노력을 보여주었다. 즉, 한마음선원의 구정탑은 불교의 가르침을 현대적이면서 독창적으로 표현한 것이다.

This study is an analysis of how the teaching of Buddha was symbolically embodied in the Hanmaeum Seonwon’s Gujeong Stupa(九淨塔). Master Daehaeng interpreted the important essence of the Buddha’s teaching, which is expressed as the Five Commonalities (五共), for the Stupa. Daehaeng explained them which are the common life (共⽣), the common mind (共⼼), work together as one (共⽤), the common body (共體) and freely give and receive whatever is needed (共⾷). The history of stupa began as a place to enshrine the Buddha's relics, and this developed into veneration of the stupa in Buddhism. Accordingly, Buddhist art expressed the teachings of Buddha through various visual and spatial expressions. This contributed to deepening people’s understanding of Buddhism and encouraging their faith. In this context, the stupa assumed a role as a significant element to the temple. Namely, the stupa is a symbolic sculpture in which materializing the convergence of sculptors, Buddha’s teachings and monastic consecration. Daehaeng conceptualized the teachings of Buddha through the comprehensive framework of the Five Commonalities (五共) and realized them as the Gujeong Stupa. By practicing the Five Commonalities, Daehaeng emphasized that all connected as one. Through the Gujeong Stupa, Daehaeng indeed concentrated on spiritual practice in Buddhism. In other words, the master says that building the stupa and walking meditation around the stupa is recognizing the Buddha nature of ourselves. Daehaeng demonstrated an effort to integrate cultural elements into Buddhism and symbolized the meaning for the Gujeong Stupa.
