초록
이 글은 ‘진실’과 ‘방편’이라는 시각으로 대행선의 전통성과 독자성의 양상을 살펴본 것이다. 특히 대행 선사가 대중들에게 가르침을 펼쳐내는 이타적 차원에서 선사만의 독자적인 가르침의 방식이 어떻게 나타나며 동시에 선사가 전하려는 가르침의 핵심이 어떤 전통을 따르고 있는지를 살펴보았다. 불교 개념어에 매몰되지 않고 그것이 담고 있는 의미와 맥락을 전달하기 위하여 일상 언어를 사용하는 점과, 선사의 정체성을 지니고 있으면서도 전통 속의 선사와는 결이 다른 면모가 대행 선사의 독자성의 핵심임을 확인하였다. 그러나 그러한 선사의 독자성은 독자성에만 머물지 않고 중도적인 양상을 보임으로써 대행선의 전통성과 독자성은 결국 전통성 속의 독자성이자 독자성 속의 전통성이었다. 일상의 언어로 전개되는 대행 선사의 진실과 방편의 중도를 핵심적으로 드러내는 것은 “불佛은 생명 교敎는 생활”이라는 선언이다. 이러한 자각을 통해서 중생이라는 의식을 버리고 부처로서 사는 삶을 강조하는 것이 바로 대행선의 핵심적인 특징이라고 하겠다.
This paper examines the traditionality and uniqueness of Daehaeng Seon through the lens of “truth” and “expedient means.” Specifically, it examines how Daehaeng’s unique teaching style manifests itself in the altruistic dimension of her teachings to the public while also examining the traditions her core teachings are rooted in. This paper confirms that Daehaeng’s uniqueness lies in her use of everyday language to convey the meaning and context embedded within Buddhist concepts rather than being mired in them. Furthermore, this paper finds that she teaches with a different feeling and texture from other traditional Seon masters while maintaining her own identity as a Seon master. However, above and beyond the uniqueness of her teachings, they also embody the Middle Way. Thus, the traditionality and uniqueness of Daehaeng Seon are ultimately a uniqueness within traditionality, and a traditionality within uniqueness. The essential way that Daehaeng reveals the Middle Way of truth and expedient means in everyday language is her declaration: “Buddha (佛) is life, and teaching (敎) is living.” This is an explanation of Buddhism expressed in two Chinese characters, 佛敎). Through this awareness, the emphasis on abandoning the consciousness of being a sentient being and living as a buddha is the core characteristic of Daehaeng Seon.
