초록

본 논문은 최근 법정사 항일운동 역사에서 논란의 중심에 있는 김석윤 배후설의 진위를 규명하고, 김석윤이 법정사 항일운동과 무관함을 제시한 연구이다. 법정사 항일운동은 법정사에서 김연일, 강창규, 방동화 등이 중심축이 되어 기획, 준비, 출정식을 거쳐 전개된 제주도민의 국권회복으로 평가받고 있다. 그런데 최근 연구에 따르면 김석윤이 법정사 항일운동 에 깊이 관여했으며 나아가 법정사 항일운동의 인적, 사상적 토대이자 핵심적 원동력이라 지목하고 있다. 하지만 이런 주장을 뒷받침할 객관적 증거는 부재하며 주장만 반복되는 실정이었고 관련 자료들에서 김석윤의 관련성은 전무全無했다. 필자는 김석윤의 ｢승적부｣, 김석익의 저술, 일제 사법기관 문서, 일제 공기관 문서 등 16건의 자료들을 검토한 결과, 김석윤이 불교 제도권에서 출가, 수계한 객관적 기록이 없었고 관음사에서 승려생활도 하지 않았으며 법정사 항일운동은 물론 핵심 주모자들과도 관련성이 없었다는 결론에 도달했다. 그리고 일제가 법정사 항일운동 참여자 수를 최초 700명에서 점차 축소 기록했다는 주장도 허위임을 명확히 밝혀냈다.

This study examines the narrative of Kim Seogyun as a mastermind behind the Beopjeongsa Anti-Japanese Movement, presenting evidence that he had no connection to the resistance. Historically, this movement was a pivotal effort by the people of Jeju Island to reclaim national sovereignty, led by Kim Yeonil, Kang Changgyu, and Bang Donghwa. Recently, however, some studies have claimed Kim Seogyun was its central ideological force, despite a lack of supporting evidence. Based on a review of sixteen primary sources, including Kim’s monastic registry, the writings of Kim Seogik, and Japanese colonial judicial records, this paper demonstrates that Kim Seogyun never entered the Buddhist priesthood, received precepts, or resided at Gwaneumsa Temple. Consequently, he had no involvement in the Beopjeongsa Temple resistance. Framing Kim as an officially recognized monk, leader of the 1909 Jeju Righteous Army, or the mastermind of the Beopjeongsa Uprising distorts the history of both events. By establishing his true status, this article confirms Kim’s complete detachment from the movement and refutes claims that Japanese colonial authorities artificially reduced the recorded number of participants from 700.
