본 연구는 니까야 ｢대념처경｣의 법념처에 배속된 다섯 항목, 오개∙오취온∙육내외처∙칠각지∙사성제의 배열을 ‘차제’가 아니라 ‘방향’의 관점에서 다시 읽는다. 임승택(2004)의 차제적 이해와 이중성 논제를출발점으로 삼되, 같은 배열에 외향에서 내향으로의 방향이 각인되어있음을 논의한다. 앞의 세 항목은 장애∙집착∙결박을 ‘버림’으로 덜어내는 외향의 국면을 이룬다. 여기서 외향은 바깥 대상을 통제하려는탐욕에 실린 집착의 벡터를 가리키며, 이 국면은 그 벡터에서 탐욕을 덜어낸다. 뒤의 두 항목은 깨달음의 자질을 ‘닦아(bhāvanā)’ 키우고 갈애를 자신의 과제로 되돌리는 내향의 국면을 이룬다. 버림과 닦음은 동일한 자양을 공유하는 한 쌍이며, 욕탐(chandarāga)에서 탐욕이 떨어지고 의욕(chanda)만 안으로 회전할 때 감산은 가산으로, 외향은 내향으로 뒤집힌다. 사성제에 이르러 이 축은 ‘갈애에 의존한 갈애의 버림’을수행의 무대에 올리고 자등명∙자귀의로 완성된다. 본 연구는 법념처의 배열이 외부 통제에서 내부 통제로 옮겨 가는 방향 전환의 구조이며,이 전환이 마음의 통제권을 자신에게로 가져오는 자기 조절의 점진적성립임을 제시한다.
This study rereads the five items of the dhammānupassanā method of practice found in the Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna-sutta. They are, 1) five hindrances, 2) five aggregates of clinging, 3) six internal-external sense bases, 4) seven factors of awakening, and 5) the Four Noble Truths. Here I focus on the “directional” move from outward to inward sphere. The first three constitute the outward phase for reducing hindrance, attachment, and bondage through “letting go.” This indicates the vector of clinging propelled by greed to control external objects, from which this phase removes greed. The latter two items form the inward phase where the qualities of awakening are cultivated and craving is dissolved through cultivation. Non-attachment and cultivation form a pair that share the same aim of nourishment; when reduction becomes addition and outward transforms to inwardness. Regarding the Four Noble Truths, this axis brings “the lettinggo of craving in dependence on craving” into a method of practice and manifests the progression to the stages of attadīpa and attasaraṇa. The arrangement thus emerges as a directional turn from external control to internal control—a gradual establishment of self-regulation bringing mastery over the mind back to oneself.
