본 논문은 ‘재가자가 아라한이 될 수 있는가?’와 ‘재가 아라한이 존재할 수 있는가?’라는 논쟁의 전말顚末을 다룬 것이다. 후자의 논쟁은 ‘재가자가 아라한이 된 이후에도 재가 생활을 계속할 수 있는가?’라는 것이다. 원론적으로는 재가자도 아라한이 될 수 있다. 그러나 현실적으로 재가자가 아라한이 된다는 것은 거의 불가능에 가깝다. 실제로 붓다 시대에도 아라한과를 실현한 사람은 극소수에 불과하다. 재가자 는 근본적으로 감각적 욕망에 토대를 두고 살아가는 존재이기 때문이다. 그런데 ‘재가 아라한이 존재할 수 있는가?’에 대해서는 부파 간에 견해가 일치하지 않는다. 상좌부 계통은 재가 아라한이 존재할 수 없다는 견해를 견지하지만, 대중부 계통은 재가 아라한이 존재할 수 있다는 견해를 갖고 있다. 상좌부에 따르면, 재가 아라한의 신분으로 재가 생활을 계속한다는 것은 불가능하다. 아라한의 성질(arahatta)과 재가자의 표상(gihī-liṅga)은 양립할 수 없기 때문이다. 그래서 재가자가 아라한이 되면 ‘그날 바로 출가하거나 그날 바로 열반하게 된다’라고 주장한다. 필자는 두 가지 주장 중에서 테라와다의 주장이 더 합리적이 고 타당하다고 생각한다.
This paper examines such debatable ideas as “Can a layperson become an arahant?” or “Can a lay arahant exist?” The second point is based on the question, “Can a person continue to lead a lay life after becoming an arahant?” In theory, a layperson can become an arahant. However, in reality it is nearly impossible for a layperson to become an arahant. In fact, even during the Buddha's time, only a very small number of people achieved arahantship. This is because fundamentally a layperson’s life is based on sensory desires. However, there is disagreement among Buddhist sects regarding the question, “Can a lay arahant exist?” The Theravāda school maintains that a lay arahant cannot exist, while on the other hand, the Mahāsāṃghika tradition holds the view that lay arahants can exist. According to the Theravāda school, it is impossible for a lay Buddhist to continue his or her life as a lay arahant, because the nature of an arahant and the presence of a house holder (gihī-liṅga) are incompatible.
