초록

본 논문은 대행선이 전통적인 선禪 수행법을 답습하는 ‘전통선傳統禪으로 회귀’가 아니라 과거와 현재의 시공간을 아울러 독창적이고 현대적인 재해석으로 ‘전통선을 회통’시킴으로써 새로운 선풍을 개척해나가고 있다는데 방점을 둔다. 이에 따라 대행선의 독창성과 정체성을 살펴보고자 대행선과 임제선을 비교 고찰한다.

대행선에서 불성론佛性論의 회통은 세 가지가 있다. 첫째, 불성론의 개념상 회통으로서 선종사禪宗史에서 심∙성∙인으로 변천해온 불성의 개념을 ‘한마음’과 ‘주인공主人空’으로 회통시킨다. 둘째, 불성을 의미하는 주인공을 관법수행의 매개로 활용함으로써 불성과 수행 매개를 일원화시켜 불성론과 수행론을 회통시킨다. 셋째, 주인공의 깨달음을 통한 지혜와 주인공의 자재권과 위덕을 통한 자비를 회통시킨다.

수행론의 회통에는 네 가지가 있다. 첫째, 대행선의 수행 요소들과 공통되는 임제선의 수행 요소들을 유기적인 관계로 회통시킨다. 둘째, 생활이 곧 수행이라는 관점으로 생활과 수행을 회통시킨다. 셋째, 믿음과 의정을 회통시킴으로써 믿음을 중시하는 임제선과 의정을 중시하는 간화선을 회통시킨다. 넷째, 문답법을 활용하면서도 자문자답自問自答을 강조하므로 두 문답법을 회통시킨다.

결론적으로 과거만으로는 대행선의 온전한 모습을 찾기 어렵고, 지금 현재와 열려있는 미래를 함께 바라볼 때, 그의 온전한 모습이 드러난다는 점에서 신선한 충격을 던지고 있다. 독자적인 언어체계로 과거와 현대를 아우르는 선사상을 구축함으로써 현대 한국 선불교에 새로움을 덧붙인 대행선의 회통성은 앞으로 한국 선불교가 전통적인 중국선불교의 행해行解로 남을 것이 아니라 미래로 나아가기 위해 어떻게 준비해야 할지 화두를 던지고 있다는 점도 눈여겨보아야 할 것이다.

This study emphasizes that Daehaeng Seon is pioneering a new form of Seon by “reconciling traditional Seon” based on its own original, modern reinterpretation of traditional Seon. It does this by taking into account both the past and present situation, instead of a “simple return to traditional Seon” by following the ways of traditional Seon practice. In order to explore Daehaeng Seon’s originality and identity, this study compares Daehaeng Seon and Linji Chan.

In Daehaeng Seon’s teaching of buddha nature, there are three types of reconciliation. First, there is reconciliation based on the concept of buddha nature. In the history of the Seon School, the concept of buddha nature has in the past been explained in terms of mind, nature, and cause. In Daehaeng Seon, the concept of buddha nature is taught based on the concepts of “One Mind (Hanmaum)” and “foundation (Juingong).” Second, by using the concept of Juingong ― another term forbuddha nature ― as the medium for the practice of entrusting, buddha nature and the medium of practice are unified. In this way Daehaeng Seon reconciles the concepts of buddha nature and practice. Third, Daehaeng Seon reconciles the concept of wisdom ― attained from awakening to one’s Juingong ― with the concept of compassion ― attained as the result of Juingong’s freedom and virtues.

Daehaeng Seon reconciles its doctrine of practice in four ways. First, Daehaeng Seon reconciles, as being in an organic relationship, the practice elements of Linji Chan ― held in common with Daehaeng Seon ― with the practice elements of Daehaeng Seon. Second, based on the perspective that daily life is a part of Buddhist practice, Daehaeng Seon reconciles daily life with practice. Third, by reconciling the concept of faith with the sensation of doubt, Daehaeng Seon reconciles Linji Chan, which emphasizes faith, with Ganhwa Seon, which in turn emphasizes the sensation of doubt. Fourth, Daehaeng Seon employs the use of questions and answers to teach, but also emphasizes answering one’s own questions. In this way Daehaeng Seon reconciles these two ways of using questions and answers.

In conclusion, one cannot grasp the full picture of Daehaeng Seon based only on its past. A complete picture is only revealed when one views the present along with the open-ended future, which gives us a novel perspective. Daehaeng Seon gives a refreshing newness to modern Korean Seon based on its own Seon philosophy ― which encompasses both past and present ― with original terminology. Daehaeng Seon’s quality of reconciliation poses for us an important question about what Korean Seon Buddhism should do to prepare for the future without holding on to the practice and understanding of traditional Chinese Chan Buddhism.
