초록

이 글은 불교적 인물형 중에 ‘원만형’ 인물형의 틀을 활용하여 화엄비평의 체계를 시론적으로 구축한 것이다. 화엄 비평 체계는 중생이사실은 부처 모습 그대로 나타난 것이라는 ‘여래출현’, 깨달음을 향하여 발심한 그 순간 이미 깨달음을 성취하여 이후의 보살행이 사실은 불국토를 장엄한 것이라는 ‘화엄의 일승보살도’, 그리고 이러한 화엄의 논리가 가능한 이유는 세계가 비로자나부처의 현현이라는 ‘법계연기’의 세가지 핵심 사상을 바탕으로 구축한 것이다. 그리고 이러한 비평 체계를 2019년 최고의 드라마라고 평가받는 <동백꽃 필 무렵>에 적용하여 불교적으로 분석하였다.

그 결과 드라마 <동백꽃 필 무렵>에는 평생 사랑받지 못하고 외롭게 살아온 동백의 소중하고 귀한 진면목을 발견해주는 용식을 통해 여래출현의 가치와 처음 발심할 때가 바로 깨달은 순간이라는 화엄의 가치를 표현하고 있음을 알았다. 그리고 이러한 진면목의 발견은 동백과 용식 사이에서만 일어나는 일이 아니라 ‘고맙다’는 말을 통해 옹산에 살고 있는 모두가 사실은 서로가 서로의 본래 모습을 확인해주며 삶의 주인공으로 살고 있는 화엄보살의 세계임을 발견하였다. 최종적으로는 소소해 보이는 각자의 선의가 쌓여 고마운 사람들이 만들어내는 기적의 세상이자 꽃으로 가득한 화엄의 세계임을 드러내어 화엄행자의 불국토를 표현하고 있음을 알았다. 따라서 <동백꽃 필 무렵>은 21세기형 화엄 텍스트의 전형이라고 할 수 있다.

This study proposes an Avataṃsaka (Hwaeom/Huayan) critique system using the framework of the "united type" of individual from the recognized categories of Buddhist personality types. I established this system based on three core concepts: "appearance of the Tathagata," which states that sentient beings do in fact appear as buddhas; the "single vehicle Avataṃsaka bodhisattva's path," which states that sentient beings attain enlightenment the moment they aspire to become awakened, and their bodhisattva practice thereafter adorns the buddha realm; and the "interdependent arising of the dharma realm," which states that the aforementioned two phenomena are possible because the world itself is a manifestation of Vairocana Buddha.

In this paper, I applied this critique system to When the Camellia Blooms‒considered one Korea's best dramas of 2019‒to analyze it from a Buddhist perspective.

As a result, I find that When the Camellia Blooms expresses the value of the appearance of the Tathagata and the value of Avataṃsaka‒which says the first aspiration for enlightenment is the moment of enlightenment itself‒through the character Yongsik, who discovers the precious true character of Dongbaek, who has lived a lonely, unloved life. And this discovery of one's true character is not something that only happens between Dongbaek and Yongsik; it is the world of Avataṃsaka Bodhisattva where everyone residing in the Ongsan area is the master of their own lives, confirming each other's true character through the words "thank you." In the end, I realized that the drama was an expression of the Buddhist realm of Avataṃsaka practitioners by revealing that it is a world of miracles and a realm filled with beauty created by grateful people who continue to act with pure intentions in daily life. Therefore, I consider When the Camellia Blooms to be a typical 21st century Avataṃsaka text.
