초록
본 고찰은 한국 현대기 강사로 유명한 탄허의 정체성을 재인식하는 글이다. 지금껏 탄허는 유불선儒佛仙을 회통한 강백講伯으로 명성이 높았다. 그러나 그에 대한 정체성은 살아 생전에도 선사禪師로 칭하였지만, 입적 이후에는 더욱 더 선사로 호칭을 하고 있었다. 그렇지만 이와 같은 탄허의 정체성에 대하여 집중적으로 분석, 재인식하는 글은 없었다. 그래서 필자는 이 글에서 탄허의 정체성을 시론적으로 분석하고자 한다.
이를 위해 필자는 다음과 같은 관점에서 이 글을 서술하였다. 첫째, 탄허는 동국대학교의 대학선원장을 8년간 맡았음을 주목했다. 이는 그가 선에 대한 학식이 풍부함을 말해준다. 그래서 탄허가 동국대 대학선원장을 맡았던 내용을 정리하였다. 둘째, 그에 대한 법어 자료집인 방산굴 법어 에는 선에 대한 자료가 나온다. 그 자료들을 분석하였다. 셋째, 탄허를 만난 대중들의 구술 증언 자료집이 발간되었는데, 그 증언에 나온 탄허선의 내용을 정리하였다. 여기에는 탄허가 선사임을 증언하는 내용이 많다. 연구 주제로 볼 수 있는 내용이 다양하였다. 넷째, 지금껏 살핀 세 측면에서 나온 내용을 종합하여 ‘탄허선’의 특성을 도출하고자 하였다. 여기에서는 필자가 동국대 학승들의 잡지인 석림 에 기고된 탄허 글 ‘선원교육’을 주목하였다. 이 자료는 최초로 활용되는 것이기에 흥미롭다.
하여튼 필자는 이 글에서 탄허의 정체성을 선의 입장에서 재인식하려고 노력하였다. 이 글이 탄허 삶의 재인식, 그리고 탄허와 유사한 행보를 간 고승 정체성의 재조명 연구에 도움이 되길 기대한다.
This paper is my attempt to analyze and define the outstanding character of Ven. Tanheo (呑虛 1913-1983), a famous Buddhist scholar and head lecturer of the modern Korean period. He was greatly respected as a head lecturer who reconciled doctrinal differences between Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism (儒佛仙). He was referred to as a Seon Master even in his lifetime, but since his death, he has become even more famous as a Seon master. However, up to the present, I have seen no article analyzing or confirming what kind of person he was. So I intend to do that in this paper.
To this end, I examined the following aspects of his life:
First, I noted that he served as dean of Dongguk University’s Seon Department for eight years, indicating that he had a wealth of knowledge. I then summarized the content of his achievements in that position.
Second, I analyzed the content of his collected Dharma talks as presented in Bangsangul Bubeo.
Third, I examined a publication that contained public testimonials of people who had met Tanheo, and I summarized the content of his Seon thought, sometimes called “Tanheo Seon.” There are many testimonials that recognize him as an eminent Seon master. The related research topics were also diverse.
Fourth, I tried to derive the characteristics of “Tanheo Seon” by synthesizing the content of all the research I had done on him. Here, I paid special attention to his article “Seon Center Education” that he had contributed to Dongguk University’s magazine for monk students, titled “Sukrim (釋林)”.
In conclusion, in this article, I tried to reaffirm Tanheo's reputation as a Seon master. I hope this article will serve to give people a renewed appreciation of Tanheo's life, and to re-examine the character and significance of other eminent monks who walked a path similar to Tanheo's.
