초록
본 연구는 초기경전을 중심으로 예류자의 성취과정과 점검방법에 대해 살펴본다.
첫 번째로 예류자의 의미와 특징을 확인하고, 7번 이상 윤회하지 않는다는 점을 통해, 윤회의 주체와 무아에 대한 논의를 진행한다.
두 번째, 예류자의 성취를 위해 필요한 조건들을 확인한다.
초기경전은 세 가지 족쇄의 제거, 삼보에 대한 흔들리지 않는 믿음, 사성제에 대한 분명한 이해, 그리고 계를 수지하는 과정 등을 제시한다.
이들 조건을 갖춘다면 출가와 재가, 남성과 여성에 상관없이 예류자의 성취가 가능하다.
또한 예류자는 자신 스스로가 예류자인지 아닌지를 분명히 알 수 있다.
세 번째는 예류자의 점검방법이다.
초기경전은 주로 족쇄의 제거나 그 수행자가 지닌 견해, 믿음, 계를 향한 태도 등으로 점검했다.
하지만 상좌부불교 전통은 수행자의 경험적 상태로 그 점검 방법을 확대한다.
이러한 차이는 열반의 해석 문제로까지 확장된다.
예류자를 분명하게 이해하기 위해서는 상좌부불교 전통을 받아들이기에 앞서, 초기경전에서 나타나는 예류자에 대한 이해를 선행해야 할 것이다.
이러한 연구가 실제 수행 장면에서 예류자의 성취를 위한 준비 과정이 되길 바란다.
그리고 그 결과를 검증할 수 있는 토대 마련의 계기가 되길 기대해 본다.
This study examines the attainment process and verification methods of Stream-Enterers with a focus on the Pāli Nikāya.
Firstly, it defines the meaning and characteristics of Stream-Enterers and discusses the subject of rebirth and the concept of no-self, emphasizing that they do not undergo rebirth more than seven times.
Secondly, it identifies the conditions necessary for the attainment of Stream-Enterers.
The Pāli Nikāya presents conditions such as the removal of the three fetters, unwavering faith in the Triple Gem, a clear understanding of the Four Noble Truths, and the process of cultivating morality (Sīla).
With these conditions fulfilled, individuals can achieve Stream-Entry through renunciation or household life, irrespective of gender.
Furthermore, Stream-Enterers can discern for themselves whether they have attained this status.
Thirdly, it explores the methods for verifying Stream-Entry.
The Pāli Nikāya primarily verifies through the removal of fetters or the practitioner's Right View, Faith, and attitude towards Morality.
However, the Theravāda Buddhist tradition expands these verification methods to include the experiential state of practitioners, extending this difference to issues of interpreting Nibbāna.
To clearly understand Stream-Enterers, it is crucial to first comprehend the understanding of Stream-Enterers as presented in the Pāli Nikāya before accepting the Theravāda Buddhist tradition.
This study aims to contribute as a preparatory process for the attainment of Stream-Enterers in actual practice scenes and hopes to become a foundation for verifying their results.
