이 논문은 『한마음요전』에 수록된 ｢게송, 선시｣편에 실린 77편의 시가작품을 소개하고 주제와 문학 표현상의 특징을 고찰하였다. 지금까지 『한마음요전』을 문화적으로 인식하고 그 의의를 조망한 연구가 있었지만 어문학적 연구는 미진한 상황이며, 이에 대한 다양한 고찰이 필요하다는 인식에서 본격적인 논의를 열고자 한 것이다.
제2장과 3장에서는 예비적 고찰로서 자료의 양상과 경향을 살피는 동시에 게송과 선시라는 용어의 사례에 대해 검토하였다. 제4장에서는 ｢게송, 선시｣편에 나타나는 주제적 특징을 파악하였고, 5장에서는 그 작품 구조와 표현미학을 살펴보았다.
그 결과 대행선사의 ｢게송, 선시｣편을 포함한 선사의 담화와 노래들이 사실은 우리 시대의 문화사적 맥락에서 주목할 만한 가치를 지니고 있다는 점을 밝혔다. 부처님오신날, 안거의 결제일, 해제일에 한문 법어, 한시 구절을 즐겨 발표하던 20세기 후반에 대행선사는 우리말 법어, 선시와 가요를 통해 법문을 전달하였다. 동시에 다양한 민요적 속성을 활용하여 직접 구연했다는 사실은 문화사적으로 특기할 만한 현상이다. 선사의 수행은 생활 속의 실천을 지향하였는데, 대중을 위한 우리말 게송 역시 생활 속 포교, 수행과 실천의 한 사례라 할 수 있다.
This study introduces 77 poems Daehaeng published in the section “Gathas and Seon Poems” in The Principles of Hanmaum (Hanmaum yojeon), and it examines the themes and characteristics of her literary style. There have been studies that have recognized the cultural aspects of Hanmaum yojeon and studied its significance. However, up till now linguistic research has been insufficient, and this study aims to open a full-fledged discussion by recognizing that we need to examine it from diverse perspectives.
In Chapters 2 and 3 of this paper, as a preliminary examination, I examine the aspects and tendencies of her writings, and at the same time, I review examples of the usage of the terms “gatha” and “Seon poem.” In Chapter 4, I identify thematic characteristics as they appeared in the section “Gathas and Seon Poems,” and in Chapter 5, I examine the structure and expressive aesthetics of her writings.
As a result, I conclude that Ven. Daehaeng’s discourses and songs, including her works in the section “Gathas and Seon Poems,” actually have noteworthy values in the context of the cultural history of our time. In the latter half of the 20th century, when phrases from Chinese dharma talks and Chinese poetry often appeared in dharma talks on Buddha’s Birthday, and on the first and last days of biannual meditation retreats (angeo), Ven. Daehaeng delivered dharma talks through Korean dharma messages, Korean Seon poems, and songs. The fact that she delivered these herself using various folk song attributes is noteworthy in terms of cultural history. Ven. Daehaeng emphasized the importance of Buddhist practice in daily life, and Korean language verses for the public can also be seen as an example of propagation and practice in daily life.
