초록
묘공 대행(1927~2012)선사는 오대산 상원사에서 불문에 귀의한 후 치악산 등지에서 수행하였다. 깨달음을 얻은 후 대중포교의 원을 세우고 세상에 나와 바라본 한국불교는 기복 신앙에서 벗어나지 못하고 있었다. 이를 안타깝게 여긴 선사는 1972년 12월 대한불교회관을 설립하였다. 한국불교 현대화를 위한 시설施設로 활용하여 기복에 치우친 신행을 바로 잡으려는 생각이었다. 그리고 자신이 깨달은 한마음의 이치를 가르치고 실천하는 장소로 활용하기 위해서였다.
이곳에서 펼친 많은 활동은 현대 대중포교의 지평을 확대하였다는 시대적 의의를 지니고 있다. 먼저 한마음선원은 신행 단체를 조직화할 때 학생회와 거사 중심의 활동을 지향하였다. 한국불교 현대화에 있어 학생들과 남성 신도들의 신행이 요구되는 시대적 변화를 인식한 것이다. 다음 한마음선원은 일요 법회, 문서포교, 미디어 포교 등 지금까지 볼 수 없었던 포교 방법의 현대화를 실행하며 대중화를 추구하였다. 마지막으로 불교의 과학화이다. 1997년 7월 6일 현재 한마음과학원의 전신인 한마음심성과학연구원을 설립하였다. 21세기 과학이 중심이 되고 그런 인식하에 사회가 운영될 것으로 예견한 것이다. 이런 현대적 대중포교 지평의 확대는 15개의 국내 지원을 설립하는 결과로 이어졌다.
한마음선원의 활동 가운데 주목할 것은 한국불교 세계화의 지평을 확대한 점이다. 선사는 1987년부터 미국포교를 시작하여 8곳의 지원을 설립하였다. 현재 4곳이 활동하고 있다. 1990년대에는 미국을 넘어 세계에 5곳의 지원을 설립하였다. 이렇게 설립된 해외 지원은 서구 사회에서 중국불교와 일본불교에 가려 존재감이 미미했던 한국불교를 알리는 전진기지 역할을 하였다. 그리고 선사의 법문을 각국의 언어로 발간하여 이러한 활동을 뒷받침하였다.
'Seon Master Myogong Daehaeng (1927-2012) entered monastic life at Sangwonsa Temple on Mt. Odaesan, and later practiced meditation at diverse places, including Mt. Chiaksan. After attaining enlightenment, she made a vow to propagate Buddhism among the common people. However, the Korean Buddhism she encountered after coming down from the mountains was obsessed with worshiping Buddha to receive personal gain and/or good fortune. Feeling shame for this state of affairs, she established the Korean Buddhist Center in December 1972. She intended to use it as a facility for the modernization of Korean Buddhism by correcting the practice of having faith only to receive personal benefits, and as a place to teach and practice the principle of Hanmaum (One Mind), a concept she herself had awakened to.
Many of the activities she performed here are significant in that they expanded the horizons of the modern mass propagation of Buddhism. First of all, Hanmaum Seonwon pursued activities centered on student associations and male laity when organizing Buddhist activity groups. This was in recognition of the changing times in which the participation of students and males in Buddhist activities was required to help modernize Korean Buddhism. Next, Hanmaum Seonwon pursued the popularization of Buddhism by conducting unprecedented and modernized propagation methods, such as Sunday Buddhist assemblies, newspaper and magazine articles, and radio and TV broadcasts. Lastly, it began to present Buddhism from a scientific point of view. On July 6, 1997, the Hanmaum Psychological Research Institute—predecessor of the Hanmaum Science Institute—was established. Ven. Daehaeng foresaw that science would become more and more important in the 21st century, and this would influence society’s perceptions. Her expanded use of mass media to propagate Buddhism led her to establish 15 branch centers in Korea.
What is noteworthy among the activities of Hanmaum Seonwon is that it has expanded the globalization of Korean Buddhism. Ven. Daehaeng started propagating Buddhism in the United States in 1987 and established 8 branch centers there, of which four are still active. In the 1990s, she established five branches in various other countries. The overseas centers she established served as bases for promoting Korean Buddhism, which at that time was overshadowed by Chinese and Japanese Buddhism in Western countries. The overseas centers also supported the propagation of Korean Buddhism by publishing her dharma talks in Buddhist texts in the language of the country they were located in.
