초록
본 연구에서는 명말청초 비구니 선사 자옹 성여子雍成如의 어록을 살펴보면서, 그 행적과 사상을 당시 시대적인 배경의 조건과 연관하여 고찰해 보았다.
명말청초 시기에는 경제적 풍요에 기반한 대중 지식사회의 문화가 성행하였고, 많은 지식인층이 선불교에 높은 관심을 가지고 참여했다. 그리고 여성들의 교육열이 높아지면서 적극적으로 글을 써서 자신의 생각과 감정을 소통시키는 여성 문집의 발간이 성행했다.
자옹선사가 베이징과 강남의 사찰에서 적극적으로 홍법 교화한 것은 황실 여성을 비롯하여 귀부인들과 관료 지식인들의 후원에 힘입은 것이다. 자옹선사는 상당 법문과 소참을 통해 대중의 선 수행을 지도했으며, 찾아오는 선객들을 문답으로 일깨워 주었다.
또한 자옹 선사가 여러 곳에서 요청을 받아 당당하게 상당법문을 할 수 있었던 것은 여성에 대한 차별 의식에서 다소 자유로워진 시대적 배경의 영향으로 보인다. 그리고 자옹선사는 임제종 법맥 계승자로서의 자신의 위상을 스스로 확보하고 어록의 가치를 높이고자 적극적으로 노력하였다. 명청 교체기 비구니 선사의 왕성한 활동과 높은 위상은 시대의 변화 양상에 영향을 받으며 전개되었음을 볼 수 있었다. 새로운 시대 속에서 요구된 리더십을 비구니 선사가 수용하면서 맺은 결실이라는 점에서 그 의의를 규명해 본다.
In this study, I examine the recorded sayings of Ziyong Chengru (子雍成如), a Buddhist nun of the Qing Dynasty, and her activities and thoughts in connection with the conditions of the times.
During the transition from the Ming to Qing Dynasty, the growing knowledge-based culture driven by economic abundance was prevalent, and many intellectuals followed Seon Buddhism with great interest. And as women’s enthusiasm for education increased, many women began to write and communicate their thoughts and feelings, publishing works that became very popular.
Ziyong was able to promote the dharma and edify people at temples in Beijing and Jiangnan Province thanks to the support of female royalty, noble ladies, and bureaucratic intellectuals. Ziyong introduced the public to Seon practice through her dharma talks delivered from the dharma seat and to small group classes, and taught the Seon practitioners who visited her through questions and answers.
In addition, I think she could teach the dharma confidently and responded to requests for her dharma talks from various places because the times were changing, and discrimination against women was waning. Ziyong also actively tried to secure her status as a successor to the Linji School lineage and to enhance the value of her own writings. From my study I saw that Ziyong’s vigorous activities and high status as a nun during the Ming and Qing transition period developed under the influence of the changing times. Ziyong achieved this level of development because, as a bhikkhuni Seon master, she embraced the need for new leadership that the new era called for, which is why her achievements are significant.
